Amulets and Muay Thai

It is quite strange if we learn Muay Thai and never talk about amulets. As Muay Thai arts involve with strong believe of superstition and ritual, so it is quite common for Muay Thai boxers who usually have a single piece of amulet with him in order to give moral support and enable them to fight with confidence. In Thai word, amulets are called "Krueng Rang Kong Klang". This word refers to any material that people believe that will bless them a good luck and clear from danger. "Krueng Rang Kong Klang" can be many kind of materials that holy by a monk or the person who are respected by boxers, could be their krus or parents, so people believe that the material has kind of superstition inside. However, we are not going to talk about all kind of amulets, but we are going to focus only on some amulets that widely used with Muay Thai and can be seen often when boxer use them.

Muay Thai Boxing Ring

Muay Thai Boxing Ring (Sangwein)

It is likely that today Muay Thai ring, use the same practice of western boxing, such as size, floor covering and stuff materials. But the remaining of superstitions associated the Muay Thai ring only can be seen in Thailand, even though it appears that there is less focus. The Muay Thai ring generally has the same size with western boxing ring, here is a guide line of Muay Thai rules regarding the ring that use for competition.

Muay Thai outfit and equipments

Muay Thai outfit and equipments

According to the long history of Muay Thai, which start from the pre-Sukhothai period (year 1238). Outfit and equipments have been changed and developed over and over the period of time. From there were no formal rules of using outfits and equipments to, until now, there are many of rules of using equipments, especially in amateur and professional Muay Thai sport competition. However, the development of Muay Thai outfit and equipments can be described as there are three development stages, which are traditional Muay Thai, amateur Muay Thai and professional Muay Thai.

Mong Kon or Mongkol

Mong Kon is a type of headgear worn by Muay Thai athletes. The Mong Kon was given after the trainer saw that the student had become an experienced fighter and learned a great deal of knowledge about Muay Thai. Mong Kon was never to be, in any way, close to the ground or else it would lose its magic.

Muay Thai Pra Jiad or Prajioud

Pra Jiad is a type of armband worn by Muay Thai athletes. In the past, their use was to give confidence and luck to the athletes. Nowadays, some gyms will give Pra Jiad to their athletes to boost their confidence. Some fighters wear one Pra Jiad, some wear two.
